The national park contains some of the best remaining coral reefs in Sri Lanka. Pigeon Island was designated as a sanctuary in 1963. In 2003, it was re-designated as a national park. The island was used as a shooting range during the colonial era. The large pigeon island’s coral reef fauna is dominated by Acropora spp. with some MONTIPORA supp. Faviidae, Mussidae, and Poritidae species dominate the coral reef around the rocky islets. Areas with soft corals such as Sinularia, Lobophyton, and Sarcophyton can also be observed. The coral reef harbours many vertebrates and invertebrates. Many of the 100 species of coral and 300 coral reef fish recorded around the Trincomalee area are found in the national park. Juvenile and adult blacktip reef sharks are seen around the shallow coral areas. The Hawksbill turtle, Green Turtle, and Olive Ridley are the visiting sea turtles of the coral reef.

It’s a popular dive for recreational SCUBA divers who love to explore ancient shipwrecks and enjoy the marine life that makes this place their home. The locals call this the “Irrakkandy Wreck,” and that’s about what everyone seems to know about this shipwreck, completely oblivious to the fascinating story behind this wreck.

In 1857, a horrific war, called the First War of Independence by the Indians against the British, started in Meerut, northeast of Lucknow. As the war spread, and amidst massive casualties from both sides, the British refugees from the Siege of Lucknow made their way out of the area to Calcutta. These refugees, consisting of mostly women and children, boarded a Peninsular Steam Company ship, the SS Ava, bound for England. On the way, they were to stop at Trincomalee to replenish supplies and also offload goods and gold to the Governor of Ceylon. Just before reaching Trincomalee, the Ava struck a shallow shoal of rocks about 25 kilometres north of the Trinco harbour. It was to be her last resting place. The passengers and the crew evacuated and the ship sank beneath the waves, her story being referred to as the Irrakkandy Shipwreck. Evening at leisure. Overnight Nilaveli.
